The tunnel seems to be making good progress.

Every day more of those precast forms are disappearing underground.

    Latest update provided today:

Chris Hodgkins, vice president of Miami Access Tunnel (MAT), the multinational in charge of boring the tunnel, said 53 percent of the first tube from Watson Island to the port has been completed, and the tunnel-boring machine is expected to arrive on the port side of the harbor in July. By September, he said, the tunnel-boring machine will be turned around and begin digging the second tube from the port to Watson Island.

Once finished, the tunnel will consist of two tubes where workers will build two two-lane roads that will carry cargo trucks and other traffic between the MacArthur Causeway and the port without clogging downtown surface roads. Construction is on schedule and will be finished in the spring of 2014, Hodgkins said.

Nice. Hopefully there is a nice party at the port in July when the boring machine emerges.

Christopher Hodgkins, vice president of Mat Concessionaire LLC, talks to reporters on Thursday, May 24, 2012.

Hodgkins said the tunnel boring machine is getting close to the port, after completing 57 percent of the drilling of the project’s first segment. This phase is likely to conclude in July when the tunnel boring machine is expected to break out at the port. Boring of the second segment, another tunnel tube in the opposite direction, will begin in September, he said.

    MIAMI -
An emergency drill simulating what would happen if workers got trapped in the Port Miami tunnel drilling site was held Thursday.

Every day, hundreds of construction workers are pushing the Port Miami tunnel project closer to completion. At its deepest point, the tunnel is 120 feet under Government Cut, and it is already 4,000 feet across, stretching from
    Interstate 395 to Dodge Island.

The construction phase is expected to last another year and a half. The tunnel is set to open in late 2014.

Wow, 4 was sensationalist and MH told the real story. Ironic

The TV stations in Miami usually sensationalize stories, much more than the newspapers do.
