Miami Beach Baylink / Light Rail / Streetcar

A little bird told me that at a particular meeting last month it sounded like an old light rail or streetcar project was getting some new energy. He related it specifically to Miami Beach, implying that it was Baylink. This little bird is a very credible source.

    Has anyone heard anything?

Miami Beach is currently studying a few transit options including:

-FEVE, a company in Spain, has offered to conduct a study to investigate the feasibility of light rail or streetcar systems in Miami Beach. FEVE is promoting a wireless street car system which charges batteries at stations

-Baylink: While engineering studies were never funded in 2004 due to opposition from city leaders, the environment today is currently much more favorable

-Miami-Dade MPO is currently studying the possibility of building premium tolled lanes throughout Dade County and using the proceeds to fund either light rail or BRT throughout the County. Miami Beach wants to ensure that they are considered for one of the potential routes

    Update:

Miami Beach staff have met with FEVE officials again this week about a potential catenary-free streetcar system that would link the mainland.

The question should be WHY do we need a Bay Link at all? It will only bring more people to an already overcrowded Miami Beach. There are plenty of ways to make the very short trip from down town Miami to Miami Beach...city busses, private taxi, water taxi and soon bicycles..Leave well enough alone.

Wow the answer to this is obvious. Miami Beach is overcrowded not with people but with CARS. Not people. So this will reduce the amount of people driving and parking on Miami Beach.

Perfect answer. You must live here. What we need is a better way to get around WITHOUT cars. Baylink will mean that Miami Beach can be a suburb as well as a resort, like Key Biscayne, to Miami. As Miami continues to pop with construction and other industries, Miami Beach on the west side will be the place to live. All pretty exciting.
  8. I'm not sure about South Beach, but I live around North Beach and there's rarely any traffic compared to places like Kendall, Hialeah, Doral, or anywhere in the "southwest."
  9. A light rail connection between Downtown and South Beach is sorely needed. Mayor Herrera Bower seems willing to approve a rail project only if it connects all of Miami Beach (North to South Beach). Light rail to North Beach is definitely worthwhile, but the priority should be Downtown to South Beach first. Then once that is built, we can look at extensions to North Beach and west from Downtown to Little Havana. Baby steps.

This line could evolve into a major east-west light rail line from FIU to North Beach via Little Havana, Downtown and South Beach. Talk about a jackpot of success there. Thousands of daily riders easy!
