Interesting proposals for the new I-395 elevated bridge running through Downtown Miami

    Project Summary

This project involves the rebuilding of the Interstate 395 (I-395) corridor from its terminus at the west of the I-95/Midtown Interchange (I-95/State Road 836/I-395) to its corridor terminus at the West Channel Bridges of US 41/MacArthur Causeway, approximately1.4 miles. I-395 is an Interstate Principal Arterial and major east-west connector serving Miami Beach and the ports. Proposed improvements include: (1) Building new elevated ramps (one eastbound and one westbound) that will provide direct linkage between I-95 and I-395. (2) Improving roadway design including updating the alignment and upgrading the roadway surface. (3) Creating a visually appealing bridge. (4) Building vertically higher structures that will improve the visual quality of the bridge.

Anticipated Construction Start Date: January 2021
    Construction Cost:$500 to 600M

I'm sitting in Starbucks and I just started hyperventilating thinking these designs were by Santiago Calatrava. Omg
    mechanesthesia likes this.
  3. The bridge designs look beautiful, but not for a highway that divides downtown. Putting I-395 underground would be extremely expensive and in the face of sea level rise, irresponsible. An at-grade boulevard would be ideal. You could have limited stop lights synchronized to maximize traffic flow. Keep it elevated until you reach NW 1st Avenue and have stop lights at Miami Av, NE 1st and 2nd avenues and Biscayne. Then, it can elevate again into the MacArthur Causeway. This is the best way to reunite these two neighborhoods of Downtown.

Guessing if the bridge is here to stay these would help a bit. It says on the site they would rebuild the entire section? wow pricey...for that.......

My vote would be similar but different. I definitely would not put traffic lights on a highway but I would bring down the highway to ground level. What I would do instead is build a bridge for US1. This would give visual priority to US1 not 395. Won't happen, we're broke but these cable thingies are a decent temporary approach. I vote for the sail looking ones (although Genting will ask for their design back if so hahaha).

Ok, all good, but to really make that work we need some kind of public transit link first, or a way to divert lots of people to the Julia Tuttle, don't we? That causeway is gridlock city for most of November through March. I can't imagine lessening capacity without having Baylink already in place to pick up the slack.
  6. Definitely. A South Beach to Downtown rail link should have been built years ago. Baylink would be perfect. Miami Beach officials need to embrace transit on their sinking islands, otherwise gridlock will be the only way. I-395 is already a parking lot on most days. When hurricanes have come in the past, evacuating the beach is a nightmare.
  7. Meh. I am having a hard time visualizing them without seeing how they would look like in real life, not those white building models.

I'm between the Infinity, Cable Stay, Wishbone Alt, Suspension, . I want something that is unique, not something that looks like a copy of another city.

... or how they would look next to a Resorts World Miami project that is double in height - 650 feet vs ~300 feet.
  9. TBH I think the Cable Stay is the best one. Looking from the ocean, it looks three sails from a ship. Coming from the east or west it looks like a bit "M" standing for Miami. Sort of like this: [IMG]

I love the view from the southeast. In some views it has this sharp, severe look to it, like it's some sort of contemporary art installation which complements the PAC.
