Title updated to reflect under construction status, and updated in our 2012 Index: All Major Miami Projects Prepping Or Under Construction

Accoording to developer Alan Faena, the project has a 20 month construction timeline.

This is an enormous project that includes both new construction and historic restoration that will change the entire area.

Roman and Williams are also designing the interior of the new Freehand Miami hostel a few blocks away, formerly the Indian Creek Hotel

I am VERY interested in finding Roman & Williams' plans or renderings for either property, for publication on Curbed Miami. Additionally, I am interested in any new information or materials related to the entire Faena Saxony project. Here is the Curbed Miami coverage of the Saxony so far:

I have also done a post about the Freehand Miami today.

For the first time, there has been some activity this week on the Atlantic property (the Koolhaas side) although for now it is just construction fencing.

It appears that they are currently ripping out the foundation work that was done for the old Cipriani tower, to allow for construction of the Norman Foster tower.

Contracts include renovatiuon of the existing Saxony, construction of the new condominium tower, construction of the new parking garage, tunnel and relocation of the small existing building to the west.

Fascinating, I am curious as to how exactly they are going to do this.

I'm dying for plans of the Koolhaas and Foster structures, as well as renderings of the Roman and Williams stuff.

The Miami Beach Historic Preservation Board approved the latest Roman and Williams revisions to the Saxony yesterday.

Faena is working on a deal with the city to build the tunnel under 34th street between the Koolhaas structureswhich will require commission approval.

As part of the deal they will also fund the removal of the wooden boardwalk behind the property, and replacement with an at grade beachwalk. This is similar to deals that the city has with the W Hotel (complete), Seville and Eden Roc (under construction).

The tunnel idea is awful. It will just become a urinal for the homeless and a great place to do drugs. Collins Avenue is owned by the FDOT so the developer would have to work with the FDOT and not the city to dig a tunnel. The developer should be pushing the city and the FDOT to make Collins Avenue more pedestrian friendly.
