Word is that MIA is working with El Al on restarting nonstop flights on the Miami-Tel Aviv route. However, there is no agreement at this time.

El Al has already committed to relaunching Miami. It will relaunch when the FAA lifts Israel's category II restriction. Unless Israel is upped to category I, El Al is banned from launching MIA-TLV.

El Al still has their ticket office open in Miami.

Some lunatics protesting there last week:

We have received official word that MIA is indeed in discussions with El Al officials.

While FAA Cat. II does not permit new routes, El Al had the route authority prior to the ban.

Does not matter. If the route was not actually being flown when the category II restriction was put into place, El Al cannot relaunch it. There is no loophole in these restrictions for dormant route authorities.

LY is not restricted from MIA - they actually operated a charter there just last month.

Irrelevant. Israel is a category II country. When a country gains category II status, airlines from that nation are not allowed to open new service that did not exist on the date of the new restriction went into place.

El Al cannot relaunch Miami service until the restriction is lifted, end of story. If you don't believe me, look up the FAA rules that spell it out in black and white.

When Israel is category I again, hopefully El Al comes back to Miami, which they have indicated they wish to do.

You are making a few erroneous assumptions. FAA Cat II clearly prohibits charter operations, which El Al is permitted to operate to MIA along with scheduled service. This is the first time that El Al has expressed interest in restarting since they left in 08.
